Τhe recipients of the Nicholas and Robert Askounes Ashford Educational Scholarship

The HIAS board announces the recipients of the Nicholas and Robert Askounes Ashford Educational Scholarship :

  • Marios Rozos, National Technical University of Athens, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Christodoulos-Markellos Komiotis, Demokritus Univercity of Thrace, Department of Medicine
  • Sofia Chatziavraam, University of Crete, Department of Biology
  • Spyridoula Giannopoulou, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, Department of International, European and Area Studies

Four alternate recipients were also selected:

  • Ioannis Papakalodoukas, National Technical University of Athens, School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
  • Konstantinos Zisis, National Technical University of Athens, School of Mechanical Engineering
  • Georgios Gakis, University of Patras, Department of Medicine
  • Spyridon Chrysovalantis Zervos, University of Crete, Department of Computer Science

Nicholas and Robert Askounes Ashford Educational Scholarship

Goal: This Grant program will promote scientific and academic mentoring for young scientists in Greece by pairing grantees with leading U.S. academics and researchers, and by providing financial assistance for them to train in an academic institution of the U.S.A. through a visit of approximately 3 months.

 Grant Details:  The Grant will provide $12,000 per grantee subject to these terms and conditions, for the following purposes:

  1. Grantee’s travel expenses to the U.S.;
  2. Grantee’s living expenses at or near a U.S. university;
  3. The successful applicants will be matched through HIAS to a host for a research project;
  4. At a U.S. university in the New England area that is certified by the Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (“SEVP”).

Grantee Eligibility:  Undergraduate students of Greek nationality or descent who are candidates for degrees in any academic discipline at accredited universities in the Hellenic Republic (“Greece”).  Family members of HIAS employees, directors and grant committee members are not eligible.

Grant Application Requirements:

  1. Proof of Greek citizenship or descent (for example, Greek passport or official certification of descent by a Greek government agency, such as a ministry or consulate).
  2. Statement of research interests and proposed study or research project;
  3. Two letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the applicant’s academic performance;
  4. Statement of other accomplishments in the applicant’s field such as research experience (CV);
  5. Transcript of grades from the university that the applicant is attending;
  6. Proof of competency in English language;
  7. Demonstrated eligibility to obtain a visa for lawful entry to the U.S.A.

 HIAS Grant Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee consists of members of the HIAS Board of Directors and other members of HIAS.
